WHAT MAKES HER AN AWESOME TUTOR

My goal is for students to not only understand the material, but feel confident with it. To do this, I always try to see the math from the student’s perspective – what they get, what they don’t get, and the connections they see. My tutoring style can be summarized by the mantra: meet the student where they are at, and then lead from there.

FUN FACTS

Life Goal: Not sure about one specific life goal, but in general I want to keep learning and educating about math, and especially how it’s used and seen in different societies.

Words to Live By:  “All seems infected that the infected spy, as all looks yellow to the jaundiced eye.” – Alexander Pope, An Essay on Criticism

Favourite Mathematical Weapon: Weapon: A pencil and eraser duo, because making mistakes is the best way to learn. The pen may be mightier than the sword, but the pencil is mightier than the pen!

GET TO KNOW SOPHIE

Education: Education: Recently received a Bachelor’s from University of King’s College/Dalhousie with a double major in Mathematics and Contemporary Studies.

Fave Tech device: Wireless headphones are truly a great invention, there’s nothing like dancing around to your favourite music as if no one’s watching (even if people are!)

Fave Book: Frankenstein – I love the way it explores complexities in humanity’s relationship with science.

Fave Song: Sound and Colour by Alabama Shakes. The music video is haunting and beautiful.

Fave Outfit: Hand-me-downs/thrifted clothes from my sister – she has the best style – and purple boots!

Fave TV Show: Always changing, but right now I love Russian Doll. (Come to think of it, it’s also haunting and beautiful).

Fave Movie: Too hard to pick one so I’ll say Little Manhattan, it’s one of my favourites to re-watch when I’m in a cute rom-com mood!

When you're not crunching numbers: I recently learned to embroider, it’s a super fun and relaxing pastime! I love watching history documentaries/video essays that deep dive into niche topics. Also, for the past four years I lived in Halifax, and you could find me going on long walks by the ocean any day of the week (probably listening to a deep-dive podcast).

What's the best thing about you? I’m always thinking outside of the box, searching for connections and patterns between different situations. I love this aspect of myself because it reminds me there is always something to learn.

NERD ALERT!

Something I am extremely nerdy about it transit systems and trains. I love comparing different cities’ transit systems and looking at old subway maps. One of my favourite memories from the past couple years was going to the NYC Transit Museum, located in an old subway station, where they had old trains, exhibits on tunnel engineering, and a gallery of all the maps of the MTA throughout time.
